Where are the session held?

Sessions are held in my home studio in North Oshawa.  Clients come from the Durham Region and from in and all around the city of  Toronto, which is about 45 min away.

Are there digital files included in my session fee?

There are 2 options when booking a session. One option is an all inclusive fee that includes your session fee and a set number of digital files (depending on the collection you select at the time of booking).  This allows you to take your digital files and get your images printed at a lab of your choice.  The second option is an  À la Carte session.  With this type of session you would pay a session fee then purchase only the images you want in either print or digital file form.

Prints are always available for order through Shelly Ferguson Photography even if you choose a digital file collection.

When should I schedule my newborn session?

The ideal time for a newborn session is within 2-3 weeks of birth.  Under 2 weeks typically works best for the sleepier style of images, whereas the older the baby the more awake style images may fill your gallery of images. In order to ensure that you get an appointment time within that very short window of opportunity it is recommended that you reserve your newborn photography session while you are still pregnant; at least 2 months in advance is advised.  I book a limited number of due dates per week (2-3) to allow flexibility for babies that come early or late.  As soon as your baby is born you should contact me ASAP to firm up a date within those first couple of weeks.  On occasion I do have room for last minute bookings after you baby is born.

Why is the ideal age between within the first 14 days?

I am happy to photograph your baby at any age.  The approach and results will differ depending on the age and personality of your baby.  The images shown in my portfolio are mostly of babies under 2 weeks old.  The older your newborn gets the more alert and 'stretched out' he will become and will not be as inclined to be photographed all sleepy, curled up and 'new'.   A 4 week old, for example, will likely be completely awake  which limits the type of 'poses' we can get and would therefore be a bit more lifestyle in nature.  However please don't stress too much over the early timeline.  Even if your baby is outside the typical age range it is still possible to create beautiful images, we just need to adjust our expectations accordingly.  A Simple Collection Session is usually recommended for older newborns.

Do you use props in your sessions?

No, I do not use props such as bowls and baskets in my sessions.  I want to keep the beauty of your baby as natural as possible.  I use very simple, neutral items such as white blankets and wraps, perhaps adding a splash of colour here and there if you desire.  I also photograph on black, creating a more dramatic 'in the womb' artistic look. There is nothing more beautiful that a freshly born baby and I prefer to not take away from that simple beauty with too many distractions.  I want to keep your newborn looking as pure and natural as possible, while still creating beautiful artwork that you can proudly hang in your home.  This style and approach is also the least disruptive to your baby, keeping him or her as comfortable as possible with minimal stress on them as possible.  We must remember they are brand new to this world!  I also highly encourage parents to be involved in some of the images...this time in your lives will happen so fast and it is an amazing thing to be able to capture that loving bond you are creating with your new baby.

When should I schedule my maternity session?

Maternity sessions are best held between 32-36 weeks into your pregnancy.  During this stage your belly has a beautiful shape and you should be feeling great, yet it is generally early enough that you won't go into labour before having your session!  *My approach to maternity sessions is very similar to my newborns - very simple and natural, using gorgeous light and shadow to capture the amazing shape of your pregnant form.  I specialize in fine art nudes, but equally beautiful images can be achieved if you are more comfortable being covered with simple, neutral fabrics (or bra and underwear)

Can I bring my other children to my newborn session?

This is a question I get very often.  Newborn photography sessions are very long and involved (up to 4 hours).  The key to a successful newborn session is a lot of PATIENCE and a quiet, calm environment.  This is often a very frustrating situation for toddlers, which then adds to the stress level of parents.  Sibling/newborn photos can be BEAUTIFUL, but at times can be challenging to get. Only you know your older child/children best and can make that call.  I do strongly recommend that if you wish to include your older children that you have someone pick them up when their photos are done or drop them off at the end as we are finishing up to get a few photos of them together.   If you prefer they stay the whole time please bring a few toys, DVDs, a small clean snack etc... to keep them occupied.

Can I bring any extended family or friends to my session?

The same reason as above would apply.  Newborn sessions really do require a calm and patient environment and the more people there are around the higher the excitement and energy levels are...it's just natural when there are multiple people gathered together.  I really do suggest that you let the final photos be a surprise to all your family and just mom, dad, baby (and possibly siblings) come alone for this experience.

Can I bring my fur babies to the session?

Please inquire about the possibility of bringing your pet to your session.  I love including pets but there are specific issues to consider and must be discussed prior to your session.
